YA Summer Scavenger Hunt

YA Summer Scavenger Hunt

Hey there! I’m excited to introduce you to a fun game! You guys are going to love this.

In June, the Alliance of Young Adult Authors is sponsoring a massive young adult scavenger hunt. This is a chance to meet some new authors, grab a bunch of free books, and sign up to win a whole bunch of epic prizes!

RULES

Each author will be given a special keyword, which will be bolded and all caps like this: BUTTERFLIES.

All you have to do is visit all the author’s sites in this order, write down the special keywords to discover the short story, then enter the giveaway with the completed secret legend HERE.

There will be one main giveaway for the main prize, but most of the participating authors will also have smaller giveaways for free books, amazon credit and author swag, so make sure you read their post carefully to see what else they’re offering while you’re on their site for the keyword.

When Destiny Clark is cast alongside her long-time crush Isaac Robinson in their school’s production of Les Misérables, Destiny is horrified to find that she has to be publicly humiliated by acting out her true feelings of rejection onstage. As their rehearsals begin, Destiny realizes the unimaginable: Isaac has developed deep feelings for her despite their vastly different backgrounds and belief systems.

But can they find the true message of love in a world full of judgement and fear?

Weaving around Destiny and Isaac’s alternating viewpoints, this modern-day retelling of Romeo and Juliet is the first book in a series inspired by the characters of Les Misérables and explores heartbreak, self-discovery, intolerance, and love.

Facing my Fears and Moving Forward

Today I stumbled across this wonderful video by Susan Kaye Quinn about facing fears in the indie publishing industry.

I couldn’t even get all the way through it before recognizing my biggest fear as an author, which is the fact that my books are about religion.

Religion in fiction has become taboo in our society, especially in the LDS (Latter-day Saint) community. I live in Utah, and like me, many of my author friends are LDS. I’ve had well-meaning authors and publicists tell me that I would find much more success if I kept religion out of my stories.

pablo-3

My series is all about religion. If I took the religion out, there would be no conflict. But it’s the story that came to me. I feel very strongly that this story needs to be told. I literally can’t write anything else until this story and these characters are out of my head.

I tried writing something else. It didn’t work.

My story is very unique. It’s not like other books out there, let alone religious ones. Most religious fiction is specifically written to convert the reader. My books aren’t like that. The religion is both the conflict and the solution. The overarching message of my story is that we need to conquer intolerance, not that I want to cram my religion down your throat. That’s what makes so many readers uncomfortable.

I’m not doing that.

But here’s where my self-doubt comes into play. I’m taking the negativity that is created from the cram-it-down-your-throat religious books and I’m applying it to myself. I’m doing that because I am letting the opinions of people who don’t understand my book influence my view of my work. These are people who haven’t read my books and have made quick judgments about it based on very little information. They see a flash of the word Mormon and they say, “Gee, that must be one of those preachy, religious books. I’d better skip that one.”

I know there are people who will say that. It’s an obstacle that I will probably always face.

pablo-2

But here’s what else I know:

My story is powerful.

I’ve read the reviews written by both religious and nonreligious people who have read my books. They were pleasantly surprised and had many good things to say about my series.

But even though reviewers are saying things like:

“Religion is a touchy subject for everyone, and the most common protocol is to simply keep your mouth shut about it, so to read a YA that is highly focused on religion is a refreshing change.” –Shadow Kisses Book Reviews

I still doubt myself.

And that doubt needs to go away. There is an amazing opportunity out there to reach readers who are waiting to read a powerful story of facing intolerance and falling in love. All I have to do is overcome my fear and go out there and find those people. Because when they do read this story, their support is unwavering.

And that’s the part I need to focus on.

Too often we allow self-doubt and fear to block us from finding our greatest potential. I’m ready to remove my roadblock of fear and move forward.

Are you with me?

Reap (The Harvest Saga #1)

 by Casey L. Bond

Blurb:

The remnants of the United States of America have been divided. From five enormous, technologically-advanced cities, the Greaters rule over the Lessers.

In the Lesser village of Orchard, things are not as perfect as Abby Kelley thinks they are. When the apple harvest draws near and the Greaters’ engineered fruits become too much for one village to handle alone, reinforcements from neighboring villages are called upon.

Having to choose between her best friend, whom she has no romantic feelings for, and mysterious newcomer Crew, Abby finds herself in the middle of a harvest that she had no intention of becoming a part of. She becomes involved in a situation that threatens the strict rule of the Greaters, and just might give the Lessers hope for a better tomorrow. But, can she help the Lessers without losing Crew?

Author Interview:

Cindy: How did you come up with the idea behind Reap?

Casey: I don’t know, honestly. I just got this idea that maybe the divide between the haves and have-nots was getting too big and wondered what a dystopian society divided along those lines and lines that one cannot help (genetic predispositions) might look like.

Cindy: How long did it take you to write Reap?

Casey: It took a few months, several revisions, edits, etc. Some books take me longer to write and some have come faster. This is probably average for me.

Cindy: When you write your characters do you fill out a character profile for each character or do you just let them form as you write?

Casey: I let them form as I write and I make a profile as I go, adding to it when I need to so that I remember things. Sometimes, I’ll be really into a scene and think, “Was the scar on his left brow or his right?” LOL!

Cindy: What’s a typical writing day look like for you?

Casey: No day is typical for me. I have kiddos, so their schedules are unpredictable and so is my writing time. I write when I can and when I feel like it and don’t sweat the rest. It works for me. I think I would personally cave under too high of daily or weekly expectations.

Cindy: How many books do you have out so far?

Casey: Um….I have fifteen, counting anthologies and serial series (as one book)!

Cindy: That’s a lot of writing! Wowza! What can we expect to see from you for the rest of 2015?

Casey: I’m working on another amazing anthology with the ladies who co-wrote Fractured Glass. I’m digging into Temptation, a spin-off from the Sin Serial Series and have a few projects simmering on the back burner. Hopefully, I can get a couple more books out before the end of the year. We shall see!

Cindy: What’s your favorite book?

Casey: That’s a loaded question, Cindy! I would have to say that my go-to author is Amy A. Bartol. Her Premonition and Kricket Series are absolutely amazing! #fangirl

Cindy: What’s your favorite book that you’ve written?

Casey: The Harvest Saga (don’t make me choose among the three!) and Catalyst, probably because it’s written within the Saga’s world!

Cindy: Thanks, Casey! It was great getting to know you a bit better and to have a peek into your writing process.
